An "exciton" ('ex si tahn) is an electron and a hole (the positively charged lack of an electron) mutually orbiting each other and hence bound together like a primitive "atom". The behavior of electrons and holes in silicon and other semiconductor materials governs their electrical properties and hence the behaviors of all electronic circuits and "chips" made from them.
